The mind of an artist is often riddled with doubt, fear, pain and insecurity, yet it continues to bring forth beautiful, genuine creations. My work aims to depict juxtaposition in its many forms and how those concepts correlate to the relationship between the body and mind. Truth and falsehood, light and shadow, and the beautiful and ugly are some of the many themes present throughout my work, shown in both abstract and representational ways. I connect them to the concept of being through texture, form and subject, folding humanlike features into abstract spaces to communicate feeling, or creating character designs connecting to the motifs and themes of my work.
I'm very interested in the mind of the collective artist, and how our experiences, thoughts, relationships, history and society shape the kind of work we create. Each work I create carries specific virtues from my life, varying day to day and hour to hour. In exploring this, I aim to represent the effects of the world, and the turmoil of the mind alongside the beauty of creation in a way that's visually digestible and interesting.
Half of my practice is digital illustration with a focus on character design. I’ve been drawing characters and portraits since I was young, and through my teens developed an interest in gaming, animation and storytelling. I find joy in the community surrounding these things, and through connecting, researching and absorbing other artists and media, I push myself to grow as an artist. Through a stylized lens, I create original characters with fleshed out stories and personalities, and celebrate my enjoyment of other media through studies, original drawings and animations.
The other half of my practice, my oil paintings, act more as vessels for me to channel through, and I choose to do that abstractly. I find it the most genuine and free way of painting, and that it can carry the emotions I want to convey in the most authentic way. I work on large canvases, with a colour palette of blues, pinks and purples occasionally complimented by reds, yellows and greens. I’m very intentional with my colour choices, as I feel that colour is the most effective way to set the tone of a painting, and it forms the foundation to build the entire painting upon.
